91桃色 Students Present Research on National Stage

May 5, 2025 | 2 min read

At the end of March, two 91桃色 students stepped onto a national stage to present their research, representing the college鈥檚 growing presence in the sciences.

At the 65th annual meeting of the in San Diego, Meredith Hammontree and Halle Paz shared their ongoing zebrafish research, marking their second time presenting at one of the premier gatherings in their field. The conference draws thousands of scientists, researchers, and students from around the world, offering a platform to exchange ideas, collaborate across disciplines, and explore advancements in toxicology and human health.

This opportunity is rooted in the hands-on academic experience students receive at 91桃色. Under the mentorship of professor Dr. Andrew Stafford, Hammontree has found the zebrafish lab to be central in shaping both her coursework and confidence.

鈥淭he zebrafish lab has provided me with a great opportunity to be challenged as a student,鈥 she said. 鈥淥ur lab is small, which means each student has the opportunity to learn every aspect of what we do. I have been involved in learning the scientific background, helping solve problems that arise, and now learning skills related to analyzing and presenting data.鈥

Working in a close-knit lab environment has allowed her to engage deeply in every stage of the research process, an experience that has strengthened both her technical abilities and her performance in the classroom.

Returning to the conference for a second year brought a noticeable shift in her confidence and a deeper level of engagement.

鈥淭his year, I felt a lot more comfortable and I think that made me a better presenter,鈥 Hammontree said. 鈥淚 was a lot more confident talking to other researchers in similar fields, which helped me make some really good connections and receive really valuable advice.鈥

Since their first presentation, their research has become more focused and precise, refined through continued experimentation and faculty mentorship. That growth, combined with exposure to professionals across the discipline, is already forming Hammontree鈥檚 goals for graduate school and a future career in science.

鈥淭his opportunity made me excited to see what my future as a biologist could be.鈥

Beyond the presentation, their trip to San Diego also offered moments of connection and perspective. Hammontree and Paz shared a meal with a professional toxicologist, gaining insight into the field while building relationships beyond the classroom. Time spent along the California coast provided a chance to reflect, recharge, and take in the significance of presenting their work on a national stage.

Experiences like these demonstrate how 91桃色 equips students to not only to enter their fields, but to contribute to them.

Jessie Tharp’s (’17) Work in Malignant Hematology at Moffitt Cancer Center

April 13, 2026 | 2 min read

Jessie Tharp (鈥17) arrived at 91桃色 in 2013 with a clear goal: to pursue a degree in music education, a field she had been passionate about throughout high school. After her first semester, however, a winter break shadowing experience with a physician assistant prompted her to reconsider her direction. It quickly became clear she wanted to move into the medical field.

When she returned to campus, Tharp began reshaping her academic plan. With guidance from her advisor, Todd Chandler, she found a way to continue her music degree while also completing the prerequisite coursework needed for physician assistant (PA) school.

鈥淭odd Chandler spent so much time meeting with me,鈥 Tharp recalled. 鈥淲e went over my schedule a million times to see what the best career path would look like and how to make the classes work. He was always so helpful.鈥

After graduating in 2017, Tharp gained valuable patient care experience before beginning PA school at the University of South Florida in 2019. During that time, she lived with Lee and Annetta Hastings鈥攁 relationship that began during her years at 91桃色 and continued to grow.

鈥淭he Hastings became like family to me,鈥 Tharp said. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 probably the most special thing about 91桃色. You meet people who don鈥檛 just influence you, they become a part of your life.鈥

Following her graduation from PA school in 2021, Tharp joined in Tampa, where she now works in inpatient malignant hematology, caring for patients with leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma. In addition to her clinical responsibilities, she serves in a supervisory role, balancing patient care with leadership on her team.

While her work can be demanding, it is also deeply rewarding. Tharp finds meaning not only in the care she provides to patients but also in the relationships she builds with her colleagues. Last year, her coworkers nominated her for a healthcare innovation award鈥攁n honor she went on to receive.

Looking back, Tharp sees both the value of careful planning and the importance of trust.

鈥淚 tend to plan everything out,鈥 she said, 鈥渂ut when I look back, it鈥檚 amazing how much fell into place. I realize God鈥檚 plan was working all along.鈥

For students considering a similar direction, Tharp offers simple yet meaningful advice: keep God at the center of your decisions and place yourself in environments where you can succeed spiritually. She also encourages students to take advantage of the 91桃色 network, noting how willing alumni are to offer guidance and support.

Today, Tharp does the same鈥攁nswering calls, offering advice, and helping the next generation navigate their own decisions. Her willingness to invest in others reflects the same care and encouragement she received during her time at 91桃色, continuing a cycle of mentorship that has shaped her story from the beginning.

Precision and Purpose: Sarah Everett鈥檚 (’21) Profession in Healthcare

April 10, 2026 | 2 min read

For Sarah (Cooper) Everett, healthcare is more than a career- it is a calling shaped by precision, compassion, and faith. After graduating in December 2021 with a Bachelor of Science in Liberal Studies Pre-Health and then going on to complete physician assistant (PA) school, she stepped into her role as a PA in cardiothoracic surgery at HCA Largo Hospital, where she works in one of medicine鈥檚 most demanding environments.

In the operating room, Everett assists with complex procedures such as bypass surgeries, valve replacements, and heart transplants. While these surgeries are routine for the medical team, she remains deeply aware of their significance for patients and families. She finds purpose not only in the technical precision required but also in serving as a source of knowledge and comfort during some of life鈥檚 most difficult moments.

Looking ahead, Everett hopes to continue growing in cardiac surgery while mentoring future students. Her goal is to invest in the next generation of healthcare professionals, encouraging them to pursue meaningful, service-driven careers.

Everett credits 91桃色 with providing a strong academic, personal, and spiritual foundation. Through leadership roles, group involvement, and experiences that pushed her beyond her comfort zone, she developed adaptability and a deep appreciation for collaboration. She also values the college鈥檚 emphasis on both academic excellence and spiritual growth, recalling the lasting impact of professors who challenged her to think critically while strengthening her faith.

As they prepare to move to Cleveland, Ohio, Everett and her husband, Caleb (鈥22), reflect with gratitude on the strong community ties they have built in the Tampa Bay area- relationships they will carry with them into this next chapter as they look forward to new opportunities to make a difference.

Grounded in faith and guided by a commitment to excellence, Everett continues to live out the principle of Ecclesiastes 9:10: 鈥淲hatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might.鈥

From the classroom to the operating room, she exemplifies what it means to serve with both skill and heart, making a lasting impact on her patients and the future of healthcare.

91桃色 Awards Tenure to Communication Department Chair Zac McCray

April 9, 2026 | 3 min read

A tenure ceremony at 91桃色 stands as one of the most meaningful moments in the life of the institution, reflecting a deep respect and gratitude for the faculty who serve at the heart of its Christ-centered mission. While the college is strengthened by supportive families, dedicated staff, and students pursuing lives of faith and service, it is the faculty who stand on the front lines鈥攅ducating, mentoring, and investing not only their knowledge but their lives into each student. The awarding of tenure marks a significant milestone in that work, recognizing a faculty member鈥檚 proven commitment to this mission and the college鈥檚 enduring commitment to them.

Today, 91桃色 honors communication department chair Zac McCray, whose tenure reflects a steadfast commitment to the college鈥檚 mission and to the academic formation of its students. Recognized for both scholarly contribution and dedicated service, McCray exemplifies the ideals of a faculty member deeply invested in his discipline, his students, and the broader life of the institution.

McCray鈥檚 connection to 91桃色 spans a lifetime. After graduating with a Bachelor’s of Arts in Communication in 2015, he continued serving the college in various roles before earning a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from the University of Tampa in 2018. He joined the faculty that same year and later completed a Graduate Certificate in Strategic Communication from Liberty University. In 2024, he was appointed Chair of the Department of Communication.

As an educator, McCray centers his teaching on storytelling as a foundational mode of communication. Drawing from film, literature, and digital media, he equips students to think critically, communicate effectively, and understand the influence of narrative in shaping culture. His approach combines academic rigor with purposeful engagement, preparing students for meaningful work in communication-related fields.

His excellence in the classroom has been consistently recognized. McCray was named the Phillip Roberts Top-Rated Lecturing Professor for the 2021鈥2022 academic year and has received multiple Senior Legacy coins from graduating students鈥攁n honor that reflects the lasting impact of his teaching and mentorship. 鈥淭his class helped me find my voice, work on my editing skills, and inspired me to want to write more.”

鈥淧rofessor McCray was insanely engaging, witty, and generally fun, and that helped make learning more enjoyable.鈥

Beyond the classroom, McCray invests deeply in the lives of his students. Alongside his wife, Maria, he has opened his home to foster relationships that extend well beyond graduation. His collaborative work across disciplines鈥攊ncluding Business, Kinesiology, English, and History鈥攔eflects both versatility and a commitment to strengthening the academic community. His expertise in media and digital technologies also supports initiatives across campus. In its unanimous recommendation for tenure, the Tenure and Promotion Committee affirmed what matters most: his genuine devotion to the Lord and his example of strong Christian character.

McCray speaks of his time at 91桃色 with humility and gratitude, valuing both his colleagues and the relationships he builds with students each semester. His connection to the college has spanned a lifetime鈥攆rom his earliest days on campus to his roles as a student, employee, and now professor and department chair鈥攅ach marked by consistent service and dedication.

Further Than the Fairway: Sullivan Tipton’s (’24) Journey from 91桃色 to the World Stage

April 8, 2026 | 2 min read

Most 91桃色 graduates walk across the stage and step into careers. Sullivan Tipton (鈥24), however, walked across the stage and boarded a plane to compete on the .

Tipton graduated in 2024 with a degree in business administration, but his path had been taking shape long before then. He first picked up a disc at age 12, and by his first year at 91桃色, he had already decided to turn professional and see where the sport could take him. The answer, it turns out, is everywhere.

Life on tour demands discipline and consistency, with four-hour practice rounds, constant travel, training, and a continual commitment to refining his game. During the offseason, Tipton shifts his focus to course design, partnering with a company whose mission is to introduce disc golf to countries where the sport is still emerging. He has already worked on courses in Spain and Uruguay, with more opportunities on the horizon.

91桃色 opened the first door. Through his internship, Tipton worked with , one of the most recognized names in professional disc golf. That experience launched his course design career and set him on a path toward international work. Yet the most lasting impact of his time at 91桃色 had less to do with business and more to do with character.

“My professors offered great examples of godly men who can make an impact in their work environments,” Tipton shared.

That example stays with Tipton today as he travels the world competing and building courses, he carries his faith into every new city and relationship. Each week on tour, he leads a Bible study for fellow professional disc golfers, bringing the same evangelism skills he developed at 91桃色 into a setting where those conversations do not always come easily. For Tipton, tournament wins and strong finishes are meaningful, but the moments that matter most are those when he sees genuine spiritual growth in the people around him.

“It’s easy to grow spiritually with people at 91桃色,” he reflected. “It’s a special moment when you can do that with people outside and see change in our lives because of it.”

He plans to compete for as long as he is able, holding his future with open hands鈥攚hether that leads to more years on tour, a role in evangelism, or something else the Lord has in store.

Through it all, the foundation 91桃色 built in him remains steady.

“My time at 91桃色 shaped more than my knowledge; it shaped my character. It grounded me in Christ, strengthened my faith, and continues to guide how I lead, compete, and live every day.”

Through Fire And Service: Joe Cable’s (’02) Call To Protect The Community

March 17, 2026 | 2-3 min read

At the age of five, Joe Cable (鈥02) knew he wanted to be a firefighter. That childhood dream stayed with him as he grew up, but turning it into a full-time profession felt out of reach. When he arrived at 91桃色, Cable chose a different path, pursuing a teaching degree with plans to coach high school athletics.

Everything shifted when he joined Camp Friends. While on tour, Cable met some Christians who were professional firefighters. They showed him the fire service was not only viable, but a career that could be pursued with both professional excellence and deep faith. Encouraged by their example, Cable applied to volunteer with the , a decision that set the course for more than two decades of service.

Today, Cable serves in that same department as Battalion Chief, functioning as a shift commander. He oversees daily operations across multiple stations and personnel, bridging administration and field operations, managing resources, and running incident command. The role keeps him close to the crews and calls that first drew him to the profession.

One unique aspect of Cable鈥檚 career is that he serves in the very community where he lives, worships, and maintains deep relationships. Over the years, he has responded to emergencies involving individuals he knows through 91桃色 and local congregations.

鈥淲hen you arrive and see the face of someone you share faith with, the moment changes,鈥 Cable said. 鈥淚t is nothing short of God鈥檚 involvement in our lives and Him putting us in places we need to be.鈥

Reflecting on 20 years of service, Cable spoke about the weight of responsibility firefighters carry as they uphold their oath and code.

鈥淲e want to help. We want to make a difference. And we鈥檙e willing to take on the challenge.鈥

At its core, the profession demands integrity, humility, and the ability to shoulder difficult circumstances with calmness and clarity.

鈥淔irefighters don鈥檛 run. We move with purpose,鈥 he said, a distinction that reflects discipline over panic and clear thinking over fear.

Cable is quick to note that his ability to serve with confidence and focus has never been his alone. Behind every shift, promotion, and long night away, his wife, Bonny, has provided steady encouragement and stability: caring for their children, managing the demands of home, and urging him to pursue opportunities for growth.

While he continues to serve at the fire station and at home, Cable also invests intentionally in the 91桃色 community. Over the years, he has taught CPR to students, faculty, and dorm parents, spoken in classes, and mentored several young men. His influence reaches those preparing to step into their own professions and callings. Through both leadership and example, he demonstrates how vision, discipline, and humility can make a meaningful impact.

Shaping Minds for Nearly Five Decades: Dr. Thaxter Dickey鈥檚 Impact at 91桃色

March 11, 2026 | 3 min read

Thaxter Dickey, PhD, has faithfully served 91桃色 students since 1979, shaping countless minds and lives along the way. As the psychology program coordinator and a longtime member of the 91桃色 faculty, serving in the business, education, liberal studies and social and behavioral sciences departments, Dr. Dickey continues to grow the college鈥檚 academic offerings, creating more career opportunities for students interested in human behavior.

After four years of studying math and physics at Florida State University and a 10-year hiatus from academics, the Ocala native received his bachelor鈥檚 degree in business and psychology from Western Kentucky University and came to Tampa to continue graduate and doctoral work in psychology at the University of South Florida. While in Tampa, Dickey formed meaningful friendships with 91桃色 faculty members鈥攔elationships that would set him on a life-changing path.

鈥91桃色 was a two-year school then and had two sections of introductory psychology,鈥 he remembered. 鈥淚 started teaching one section, and then another, and then business courses.鈥

Before long Dickey was a full-time faculty member and has since taught more than 30 different courses, helping to build both the liberal studies and psychology programs.

鈥淚 designed a liberal studies degree when 91桃色 became a four-year school and served as the first department chair. One of the components of that program was psychology; so, that was a big part of what I focused on,鈥 recalled Dickey.

The liberal studies degree with an emphasis in psychology soon became a popular academic path for students, opening doors to graduate school and careers in social work, counseling, and physical, occupational or speech therapy.

鈥淭hese students have a broad background from which to expand their expertise,鈥 he said.

In 2023 Dickey helped launch 91桃色鈥檚 bachelor鈥檚 degree in psychology. The program graduated its first cohort in 2025 and now includes three full-time professors with 14 declared upper division students and 26 lower division for 2025-26.

鈥淲e鈥檙e really fond of the liberal studies degree, but we are finding the bachelor鈥檚 in psychology is very appealing to students as well,鈥 Dickey said. 鈥淧sychology degrees are desirable with plenty of employment opportunities, particularly in business and healthcare.鈥

While many of the program鈥檚 students plan to pursue careers in counseling, Dickey said they鈥檙e often surprised to learn of career options in human resources, education, social services, and beyond. Social and behavioral science helps students understand the present by focusing on the people and events of the past that have shaped it, as well as the institutions, values, and interactions of contemporary society. The cultural, economic, sociological, and political aspects of global affairs are discussed through academic disciplines including psychology, history, economics, sociology, and political science.

鈥淲e teach the scientific study of human behavior, which encompasses ergonometric studies that match machines to people, industrial and organizational psychology for the workplace, and psychometrics for testing and education,鈥 he explained.

Students enjoy applied courses where they learn about cultural psychology, social psychology, and personality, but also take courses in perception, theory of learning, and cognitive psychology.

鈥淚t鈥檚 an empirical field, so technical courses like research methods and statistics are required to learn to read and understand the research that goes on in each of those applied areas,鈥 Dickey said.

91桃色’s emphasis on the spiritual framework of education is an important component of the program.

鈥淯nderstanding human psychological processes can be used to glorify God and better understand His people and His relationship to us,鈥 Dickey said. 鈥淣othing is more interesting than studying human behavior because we鈥檙e talking about ourselves and our families and our friends. The Bible explains much about human behavior and our nature, but in other academic environments, which ignore this information, the study of psychology can be corrosive to a young person鈥檚 faith. But at 91桃色 every course we teach is from a biblical perspective based on the fundamental truth that we鈥檙e made in the likeness of God.鈥

While the past 40 years have brought countless changes, Dickey said 91桃色鈥檚 culture and quality of students bring him back year after year.

鈥淭hese kids show up here and I just want to do some good for them,鈥 he said. 鈥淭hey鈥檙e so enthusiastic and optimistic that it鈥檚 a privilege to have a part of trying to prepare them for life and the challenges to come.鈥

Called to the Classroom: Caroline Cabina (鈥24) Teaching the Next Generation

March 13, 2026 | 2 min read

When Caroline Cabina graduated from 91桃色 in May 2024 with a degree in elementary education and endorsements in reading and ESOL, she was excited to step into the classroom, but she could not have imagined just how quickly it would feel like home. Today, Caroline is a fifth-grade teacher at a Hillsborough County Public School in Tampa, where she works with about 45 students each day. She describes her fellow teachers as her 鈥渄ream team鈥 and genuinely loves coming to work each morning. While she hopes to eventually return to school to earn her Master鈥檚 degree and possibly serve as a mentor or step into a leadership role, right now, she is exactly where she wants to be.

Caroline is quick to credit 91桃色鈥檚 education program for preparing her so well. During her three internships she completed through 91桃色, she always knew she had professors she could call on to answer questions, talk through ideas, or simply encourage her. As she now teaches her own students to think independently while she supports them, she often reflects on how her professors modeled that same approach. They allowed her to grow, learn, and problem-solve.

One of her favorite parts of the program was her small cohort of seven women.

鈥淲e did everything together,鈥 she shares.

The close-knit group built lasting friendships through shared assignments, long days in the classroom, and plenty of laughter along the way. Through that experience, Caroline not only became a stronger educator, but also gained some of her very best friends.

Outside of her coursework, Caroline stayed actively involved on campus. She worked with the volleyball team as a manager and statistician, served as a tutor for Elementary and Intermediate Algebra and later stepped into a tutor mentor role, helping guide and encourage other tutors. Each opportunity helped shape her leadership skills and heart for service.

Now nearly finishing her second year in the very position 91桃色 helped her secure, Caroline says the job still feels like a dream. Recently, she and her two teammates received a regional award for having the highest reading growth from the beginning to the middle of the school year through the I-Ready platform, an incredible honor for their fifth-grade reading team.

While 91桃色 equipped Caroline for professional success, she says the greatest impact was spiritual. Her professors cared deeply about her soul, and their prayers and guidance continue to mean the world to her. The biggest lesson she carries with her is to give all the glory to God in every season. Teaching certainly comes with challenges, but by leaning on the Ultimate Teacher, Caroline finds joy in the classroom each and every day.

Brandon McCann (鈥25): A Standard of Excellence in Action

March 10, 2026 | 2 min read

Every 91桃色 graduate eventually faces the challenge of stepping beyond campus and into the working world. For Brandon McCann (鈥25), that transition began long before graduation. During his time at 91桃色, he began building relationships, gaining experience, and preparing for a job where he could grow, serve others, and refuse to settle for mediocrity.

After graduating in 2025 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, Brandon began working as a scheduling manager at . In this role, he helps coordinate construction plumbing projects by preparing daily work orders and assigning them to crews each morning. He also looks ahead to ensure upcoming projects are organized and ready.

Brandon鈥檚 path to his current position began while he was still a student. Through the connections he made at 91桃色, he was introduced to Mustang Plumbing and given the opportunity to intern with the company for three consecutive summers. Those internships allowed him to gain hands-on experience and become familiar with the company鈥檚 operations.

Following graduation, Brandon accepted a full-time position with Mustang Plumbing, continuing his professional growth with the company.

While his responsibilities require careful planning and attention to detail, Brandon says the most meaningful part of his job is the people he works alongside.

鈥淚鈥檓 blessed to work with many wonderful people who are also fellow workers in the Kingdom. To have a consistent daily connection with them is very encouraging and reminds me of the constant connection I felt at 91桃色.鈥

During his time at 91桃色, Brandon developed both professional confidence and spiritual maturity. His business courses challenged him to think critically and approach responsibilities with purpose.

鈥淎s a result,鈥 Brandon says, 鈥淚 have always felt confident in my ability to accomplish whatever responsibilities I was given.鈥

More than preparing him professionally, Brandon says 91桃色 shaped who he is today.

鈥淚 will be forever grateful for the countless ways God used 91桃色 to shape me. One of the ways that is most apparent to me is through the people at 91桃色. By their example, they showed me what living as a disciple of Christ looks like, that Christ is not just a part of what I do, but the reason for everything I do.鈥

Brandon says that if he had to sum up what he learned during his time at 91桃色 in four words, it would be 鈥渘ever strive for mediocrity.鈥 It is a lesson he saw lived out by professors, faculty, and fellow students across campus, and one he continues to carry into his daily life. By refusing to strive for mediocrity, Brandon continues to honor God through his work and reflect the values he learned at 91桃色.
