Adopt Student Spotlight: Micah Cantonwine
Adopt student Micah Cantonwine came to 91桃色 to strengthen her faith and has found a community of support both academically and personally.
鈥淚t鈥檚 very encouraging to be around others who want to follow God,鈥� said the first-year student from Greencastle, Indiana. 鈥淚f you only looked at my academic performance you wouldn鈥檛 know what was happening in my life, because school is my escape.鈥�听
In 2021, Micah鈥檚 family was forever changed when her father experienced sudden onset of Sjogren鈥檚 Disease and postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS).
“He woke up from a nap on Sunday afternoon to go to church, and immediately knew something was wrong,鈥� Micah explained. 鈥淗e鈥檚 been sick ever since, from inflammation of the body.”听
The conditions compromised his immune system and memory, leaving him with seizures and debilitating short-term memory loss. With her father unable to work, Micah stepped in to help her two younger sisters and her mom, an elementary school teacher, around the house. A soccer player sidelined by a concussion her senior year, Micah worked through high school as a coach and referee for youth soccer programs.听听
鈥淚 was starting to plan for college and knew about 91桃色 from the Indiana Camp I attended, but also knew I could get a full ride from a state school because of financial aid,鈥� she said. 鈥淲hen looking through financial aid options at 91桃色 I saw the Adopt program, and thought, 鈥業 might as well try.鈥欌��
Micah was eventually matched by the Advancement office to a family in Indiana and is now double majoring in finance and business, with hopes of earning her CPA.
鈥淐oming to 91桃色 has been an adjustment, but I鈥檝e joined the Woven鈥檚 Club and there are people here who support me and that I can talk to. The only reason I鈥檓 here is because of scholarships,鈥� Micah said. 鈥淓very donation is appreciated, because you don鈥檛 always know the story behind who you鈥檙e helping. Grades don鈥檛 tell the
entire story.鈥�听
